The
ESA ?-lab is a Division in the EO Science, Applications & Climate
Department of the EO Programmes Directorate. To achieve its mission,
?-lab manages the full range of the innovation pipeline. ESA ?-lab
creates or discovers new transformational ideas, selects and nurtures
the good ones, develops the corresponding "solution" or product by
maturing and testing it, and finally invests in the best ones via the
InCubed programme to reach market adoption. The
EO industry is in the middle of a perfect storm. The new-space approach
in manufacturing provides no endless testing, no custom devices, and
shorter Earth-to-space time. This paradigm disrupts the traditional
space value chain and puts a solid competitive hedge on traditional
Large System Integrators. Smaller satellite firstly means lower launch
cost; shorter deployment time means lower cost of deployment; numerous
constellations (mainly in Low Earth Orbit) mean better revisit time and
geometry resolution. But, the increasing digital component also has a
substantial impact on the downstream segment of the value chain:The increased commoditization of data (Space Data included)The lowering cost of HPCThe growing onboard processing capabilitiesThe shift from the human user to the machine user. This
evolution will dramatically change the positioning of the EO downstream
industry. Furthermore, a growing interest exists in exploiting Earth
Observation Data as a source of readily available information about
natural phenomena and humans' attitudes toward shaping our planet. The
challenge comes from talking about 'data fusion,' or joining many
diverse data sources such as social media, satellite imagery, mobile
phone telemetry, and weather sensors. Thanks to the Digital Transition,
the User request is not only for information or knowledge but for
wisdom.The
ESA ?-lab industry panel will present some of the more promising
project activities in this area with pitch presentations from AIKO,
D-ORBIT and Planetek of recent development and R&D opportunities for
the research centre and academia. A Q&A session involving the
audience will conclude the panel.
